The Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando, founded in 1752 during the reign of Ferdinand VI, is the artistic institution with the longest cultural trajectory in Spain, the first public collection of fine arts from its foundation in 1752 until the opening of the Prado Museum in 1819. It houses one of the best art galleries in the country, spanning five centuries and different schools. It offers a complete tour through the history of art from the Renaissance to the most current trends of the 21st century.
The Academy Museum's artistic heritage includes more than 1,700 paintings, 1,300 sculptures and 20,000 drawings, as well as engravings, photographs, furniture, silverware, porcelain and other decorative arts.
The Goya halls stand out with thirteen paintings of the artist, the second best collection of the Spanish master in the world. The museum also exhibits the only painting by Arcimboldo preserved in a Spanish public institution and works by great masters such as Tintoretto, Van Dyck, El Greco, Rubens, Ribera, Murillo, Zurbarán, Velázquez, Alonso Cano, Sorolla, Zuloaga, Solana, Juan Gris, Julio González, Picasso, Chillida and Tàpies, among many others.
